Sarah Lau

  • I manage the China desk for BLM’s commercial advisory and private wealth group to help clients that would like to trade in China understand the business implications of operating in China. For Chinese businesses wishing to practice in the UK, I advise on the best practices to facilitate this. My role is of a pure advisory capacity focused on advising early-stage technology start-ups on matters related to fundraising, intellectual property protection, joint venture, and commercial agreements.
  • I am an experienced lawyer and have advised on multiple aspects of law, including corporate, commercial, real estate, immigration, employment, and crime. I also have a background in international commercial law, and recently led the legal team who managed the reporting and corporate work of the £1million partnership between Innovate UK, the UK government’s innovation arm, and TusPark UK, China’s largest innovation ecosystem, to deliver the first UK-China investment and accelerator programme.
  • I was Manchester’s first Chinese Barrister-at-law and was a practising barrister for 11 years.
  • My experience includes first-hand operational involvement of building and running a tech start-up, having co-founded a property tech startup and SaaS platform as the head of legal.
  • I am fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
  • I have a position on the Board of Trustees for Wai Yin Society, a Chinese-founded charity in Manchester and now one of the largest BME centres in Manchester which provides employment, education and community services for Chinese men and women and all ethnic minority groups.
