To mark International Women's Day, BLM Managing Partner Vivienne Williams has spoken to Legal Week about what impact the last year has had on female career progression in the legal sector and what advice she would give her younger self. Vivienne also shares some top tips for junior women looking to move up through the ranks in law.
She says,"My proudest achievement is becoming managing partner at BLM; it’s the pinnacle of my career. I was the first person in my family to go to university, let alone become a lawyer.
“My appointment as managing partner made my family incredibly proud and was largely the result of their investment and support throughout my life.”
“For me, timing has been a big consideration. I was a client relationship partner for a major insurer client, I led two of our business streams and I felt as though I had a lot more to give to both roles. The prospect of becoming managing partner was there, as was the encouragement to apply for the position and, although it would mean relinquishing those roles, I knew I had to seize the opportunity.
“It’s important to recognise that the timing of opportunities may not always suit where you are in your career but sometimes you have to be prepared to embrace the curve balls that come your way. They could lead to greater things.”
