Motor Insurers' Bureau could face rising claims as surge in e-scooter crimes seen in capital

02 Dec 2020

E-scooters are here, and they're here to stay. But, what comes with that is a whole raft of questions for insurers and most predominantly is the question of who will pay if there's a claim? Insurance Times reports that injuries from crimes committed on uninsured e-scooters are on the rise, almost 300 in the last four months according to Police data - so who is liable?

Speaking to Insurance Times, Alistair Kinley highlighted some important policy aspects relating to e-scooters, he said, "injuries resulting from muggings/assaults on e-scooters might be more problematic... you'll see arguments that the injuries are from the use of a vehicle (the e-scooter), but because it'll be uninsured, the only potential payer is the MIB."
