03 Aug 2020

Approximately 40% of the worlds seafarers have been directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been almost 300,000 workers stuck at sea, many of whom are now out of contract.

BLM's marine expert partner, Gemma Pearce has spoken to Insurance Day about this emerging issue and how some may argue that it could have been avoided by the re-routing of vessels - but what about the expiration of visas of those onboard, medical certificates or passports?

Gemma said, "The damage to the sector will be unknown for some time although this is likely to be multi faceted. First and foremost, ship owners can certainly expect to be presented with claims from their employees."
