Diversity and inclusion is about getting the best people in the team, regardless of prejudice. No obstacles can beat that business rationale, yet the insurance industry still falls short of this, with too few women making it to the higher rungs of leadership.

In a feature for Reactions magazine on women leaders and gender inequality, BLM partner and head of the London office, Jennette Newman has given her thoughts on diversity, alongside a number of other high profile women in insurance.

Jennette said: “People in various roles bring different skills and invaluable experiences to our firm and indeed, any other organisation. It is important that we, as a community, recognise this and harness it for the benefit of our businesses and our customers and that we allow our people, irrespective of background, physical ability or age, to excel.

“It is no secret that the UK legal and insurance industries have historically been slow to recognise the importance of a diverse workforce, however both sectors are working hard to address the imbalance and we have seen many great examples of diverse thinking and positive solutions and role models that should be celebrated.

“Being diverse is about more than having the right number of female members of staff or ethnic minorities for example, it's about embracing and using our differences and understanding the ways in which that difference contributes to a fully functioning and flourishing company and assists in delivering on strategic goals, business growth and legacy.”
