Criminals target education establishments with ransomware

Action Fraud, the UK's cybercrime and fraud reporting centre, has issued an alert to warn teachers of the dangers posed by cold-callers purporting to be officials from the “Department for Education”.

According to Action Fraud, “fraudsters are initially cold calling education establishments claiming to be from the DfE. They then ask to be given the personal email and/or phone number of the head teacher / financial administrator….”

The person will then send an email which includes a zip file attachment which contains ransomware. Once downloaded, it will encrypt files and demand money to recover the files.
