BLM, the UK and Ireland's leading risk and insurance law business, has expanded its team in Scotland with the appointment of new partner Frank Hughes. Frank joins the team in Glasgow from DAC Beachcroft and specialises in catastrophic injury and disease litigation.

Frank is a much-respected lawyer within the insurance industry conducting litigation across a wide area of expertise specialising in catastrophic injury and disease litigation. He is an Accredited Specialist in Personal Injury law and acts as an expert witness in solicitor’s negligence cases. He is the Vice Chair of FOIL in Scotland and a member of the Regulatory Committee of the Law Society of Scotland, as well as having tutored in law for many years at the University of Glasgow.

BLM’s team in Scotland has also been strengthened with the appointments of two new associates – Murray Steel from Harper MacLeod and Kirin Binning from Brodies and two new solicitors - Zoe McDonnell from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and Judith Hutchison who was practising on her own account.

Commenting on the appointments, BLM partner and member of the firm’s executive board David Taylor, said: "We have ambitious plans for growth in Scotland and we are delighted to welcome Frank Hughes to BLM given his extensive industry expertise.  He is a natural extension to our business given his experience in representing many of the top global insurers as well as his reputation within the industry.”

Mike Brown, senior partner at BLM, said: “We are dedicated to developing the next generation of lawyers and our new associates are already immersing themselves in a broad range of cases across our customer base, which includes a large numbers of corporate insured businesses, and health and public sector bodies. They are joining the firm at a very exciting time and we are delighted that they are here to join us on our journey.”

BLM has invested heavily in both organic growth and lateral hires over the past 12 months across the UK and Ireland. The firm promoted six associates to partner this year and has had a number of significant appointments, including partner Fintan Canavan who joined the abuse claims group and partner Graeme Moore who joined the professional indemnity in Belfast, as well as the appointment of consultant and former Law Commissioner, David Hertzell in January 2015.

The firm recently announced the appointments of new Partner – Chartered Legal Executive (FCILEx) Antony French and consultant, Ian Sinho who previously held the position of technical claims director within AXA, significantly strengthening the firm’s catastrophic injury offering.
