BLM IS AN EXCITING PLACE TO EMBARK UPON YOUR LEGAL CAREER, WE VALUE WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP AND WE KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF NURTURING AND GROWING OUR PEOPLE TO CREATE LEADERS OF THE FUTURE.
Our two-year trainee solicitor programme has been designed to maximise your potential. You'll complete four six-month seats, giving you exposure to a variety of teams across the business. You'll also gain the experience and develop the skills required of a qualified solicitor within insurance law.
You may also have the opportunity to spend time on secondment with one of our customers or with the Association of British Insurers. Throughout your programme you will work with our partners and associates on a variety of cases from low to complex, high-value claims, from initial investigation through to trial. You will have all of the support that you need from your assigned supervisor and our in-house talent development team.
Partners encourage early responsibility and expect trainees to manage workloads autonomously and as part of a team. We will provide a supportive and friendly working environment and you can expect clear opportunities for career progression and a broad scope of challenging and interesting work.
We recruit a small number of high-quality trainees each year to ensure that we can provide the best possible training and development opportunities – you can be a big fish in a big pond.
We also recruit trainees into our offices across Scotland and Ireland. Trainee numbers and recruitment processes can vary between offices, based on business need. If you are interested in applying to a location in these regions please email email@example.com
Trainees represent a significant investment for the business and so we need to ensure that you are up for the challenge.
We look for a blend of high academic ability and people who fit with our dynamic, ideas led and ambitious culture. Please note we do not screen any candidates out of the process based purely on academic results, we consider your entire application.
You should be confident and resilient in your approach and demonstrate exemplary interpersonal written and verbal communication skills; you should look forward to assuming real responsibility in a supportive environment from an early stage.
Working with BLM’s prestigious customers, you will have strong commercial awareness and will need to develop your expertise in a relevant field of work to understand the context of our customers’ industries.
As trainees are the partners of the future, we believe that your development is essential for the firm's organic growth. BLM supports its trainees and future joiners through the LPC and PSC, working with external providers to offer you the best possible training.
Once you have started we will pair you with a training supervisor who will be responsible for your day-to-day supervision. Your supervisor will also provide support through coaching and mentoring. There is an active interest in encouraging career development so that you can feel fully prepared in making the transition from trainee to newly qualified solicitor.
We recruit to retain. Many of our current partners trained at BLM and this is something that we are very proud of. As you approach the end of your training contract, our training principal will discuss your qualification preferences with you.
In addition you will receive these extra benefits:
- BLM will fund the LPC future trainees who have not already completed this.
- Trainees automatically receive £1,000 salary increase in their second year
- Trainees receive 25 days holiday

“The highlight of the induction was getting to know all of the other first seat trainees from the different offices. We all did our first day and the PSC together and it was really nice when we’d finish the day and go for dinner/drinks together.”
